​In Memory of Professor Wiktor Osiatyński, a Champion of Human Rights

It was with great sadness that we learned of the passing of Professor Wiktor Osiatyński, a lawyer, social activist and, above all, a remarkable lecturer and relentless advocate of human rights. He died in Warsaw on April 29th at the age of 72.

Wiktor Osiatyński's life and work inspired human rights defenders in Poland and across the world.

In the 1990s, Professor Osiatyński was the director of the Centre for the Study of Constitutionalism in Eastern Europe at the University of Chicago. In 1995, he became a professor at the Central European University in Budapest. He cooperated with the University of Connecticut and the University of Siena. He also lectured at Columbia University, Stanford University and Harvard University.

He was an energetic social activist. He was a member of the board of the Stefan Batory Foundation and the board of the Institute of Public Affairs. Since 1995, he was a member of the global board of the Open Society Foundations. He initiated the creation of the Strategic Litigation Program of the Helsinki Foundation for Human Rights and subsequently became a member of the program’s board. He was devoted to disseminating knowledge on addictions, including alcoholism.

An inspiration to so many

Professor Osiatyński wrote almost 30 books on history, social and political thought, constitutionalism, human rights, science, addiction and sport.

His lecturers and texts inspired numerous activists and human rights defenders not only in Poland, but also across the world. He will stay in our memories as an enlightened champion of human rights protection. We will always remember him with gratitude.

In these difficult times when fundamental rights and liberties face new challenges, he will be deeply missed.
