According to the U.S. Department of State report on human rights practices in Lithuania, the biggest human rights issues currently facing the country are related to the justice system, the welfare of children and intolerance. The State Department drew attention to the exceptionally poor conditions in detention facilities, ineffective measures to combat violence against children and trafficking in human beings, intolerance of and discrimination towards national and ethnic minorities as well as the LGBT* community.
