The Istanbul Convention came into force in the Netherlands on March 1. Forty-five percent of Dutch women over the age of 15 have had to deal with physical or sexual violence at some point. The treaty gives a new impetus to tackling this social problem. For example, the Netherlands should take measures to prevent violence by combating discrimination against women, to eradicate stereotyped roles and to contribute to women's own strength. Measures should also be taken to encourage men and boys to actively contribute to the prevention of violence against women.
