Roberto Saviano, an investigative journalist and best-selling author, recently denounced the conditions of Italian prisons in a moving editorial in the major newspaper La Repubblica. "If prisons really give the measure of how well a democracy is faring, then Italy is doing really badly," he writes, commenting on the striking photos taken by Valerio Bispuri in the Poggioreale prison.
