According to Minister of Foreign Affairs Bert Koenders, investing in journalism in the Russian language is important, as the Russian government is "giving stronger direction to journalists and media organizations." Research shows that, since the occupation of Crimea and the intervention in Ukraine, Russia is increasingly performing press control, threatening media diversity. Koenders wants people from Russian-speaking countries such as Ukraine, Belarus, Georgia and Azerbaijan to be able to choose for independent journalism.
