Under the current law, obtaining Italian citizenship as a second-generation immigrant is almost impossible, meaning there are over 800,000 "orphans of citizenship." The long-awaited reform of the citizenship law, allowing for a (tempered) jus solis in order to facilitate the integration of second generations, is currently being discussed by the Senate. But the law is vehemently decried by its opponents, such as the extreme-right parties Forza Nuova and Casa Pound, and there are concerns about whether this will really (and finally) be the time that the law is changed.
