Belgium was condemned by the European Court of Human Rights following the complaint of a detainee who was not offered medical treatment adapted to his mental condition, which was medically proven. No long-term solution was found for this detainee, who was convicted of pedophile acts and already served 9 years in the psychiatric section of the prison of Merksplas. Just like the Belgian League of Human Rights, the Strasbourg court pointed out the structural deficiency of the Belgian detention system and gave the country two years to organize a system that is able to guarantee detainees’ dignity.
