As the April 8 election nears, Hungarian media is reporting that the country's intelligence agency, the Constitution Protection Office, was aware as early as January of foreign citizens’ efforts to collect information on NGOs linked to the Open Society Foundations. These efforts followed a similar script: NGO leaders were tricked into meetings and recorded, and the recordings leaked to the press. In January, Liberties was targeted in this way. While there is still much we don’t know about these attacks, this article puts them in context and shows what shrinking space looks like in reality.
