From April 23 to April 25, the football teams of the Italian first and second league took part in the initiative launched by Antigone, Cild and Amnesty International Italy asking for truth for Giulio Regeni, the young Italian researcher tortured and killed in Egypt.
Before the beginning of their matches, all the soccer players of Serie A and B stepped onto the playing field with a banner reading "Truth for Giulio Regeni." Exactly three months after Giulio’s abduction, the endorsement of the Italian sport world for this initiative is proof that the Italian society is sensitive to this case and demands true answers.
Italy demands answers
At the beginning of April, Atletico Diritti — a soccer team composed of migrants, prisoners, ex prisoners, and students playing in the third league — was been the first to support the campaign.
Those Egyptian authorities involved in Regeni's abduction and death cannot go unpunished, and this murder cannot go unanswered — especially because the case of Giulio Regeni is not an isolated one. Since the beginning of 2016, at least eight people have been tortured and killed in Egypt.
On behalf of human rights, this situation cannot continue.
