The fate of one Syrian refugee is threatening to topple Slovenia's government. The case of Ahmad Shamieh spilled into the spotlight last week when the ruling liberal SMC party took him under its protection. Shamieh arrived in Slovenia in 2015, but entered the EU via Croatia. He is therefore threatened with deportation under EU rules stating that the entry state is responsible for applicants. The SMC wants to bypass this and allow Shamieh temporary residence in Slovenia. But the SMC has failed to get a consensus for this, and there are opposition calls for the prime minister's impeachment.
