The criminal court of Brussels, Belgium, acquitted four citizens who hosted migrants in their homes, while eight other defendants received suspended prison sentences. On 20 October 2017, twelve people were arrested on suspicion of human trafficking. Meanwhile in France, the conviction of the farmer Cédric Herrou, who became a symbolic figure, and another militant, were reversed as well. In August 2017 they were given four-month suspended prison sentences for having accommodated migrants, and for having helped them cross the Franco-Italian border.
