The city council of Rotterdam has turned to the Dutch state secretary for finance, Eric Wiebes, to guarantee the privacy of car park consumers in the event of pay-by-plate parking. Currently, the data of consumers are stored for seven year because of an agreement with the tax authorities, who want to be able to request data in order to detect fraud. Rotterdam wants to strike a better balance between privacy and the fight against fraud by reducing the data retention period to three months, but because of the standing agreement, only the national government can implement this change.
