Police in Rome have used water cannons and batons in a clash this morning with refugees who had occupied a small Rome square in defiance of an order to leave a building where they had been squatting. About 100 people had occupied the square since Saturday, when roughly 800 squatters were evicted from a nearby building they had occupied for about five years. Television images showed police dressed in riot gear and swinging at people with batons. A sheet was hung on the nearby building reading "We are refugees, not terrorists" in Italian.
