Reporters of the investigative Rise project in Romania were ordered last Thursday to reveal their sources or face huge fines under the EU’s General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). The Organised Crime and Corruption Reporting Project (OCCRP) described the threat by the Romanian government as a "serious misuse of the GDPR by self-interested politicians seeking to protect themselves." The threatened journalists are looking into the abuse of EU finds, and posted related Facebook posts. Romania's data protection authority asked them to reveal their sources or face a daily fine of 644 euros.
