In one of the most corrupt EU states, Laura Codruta Kovesi achieved hundreds of convictions against powerful politicians and judges.

The former chief prosecutor of Romania’s National Anti-corruption Directorate (DNA) has been tipped as the favourite to become the European Union’s chief prosecutor. Laura Codruta Kovesi led the DNA during one of its most successful periods, when it prosecuted hundreds of corrupt politicians and judges, until she was sacked last year for reasons she maintains were political. Justice Minister Tudorel Toader, who initiated Kovesi's removal, now says that he will do everything in his power to block her appointment to the EU post and make Union officials aware of her "abuses" at the DNA.
