An analysis of alerts submitted to the Council of Europe Platform to promote the protection of journalism shows an emerging trend of threats across Europe to the independence of public broadcasters or their regulatory bodies. This is particularly disturbing because, as noted by a recent report from the European Broadcasting Union, a well-funded public media service is a good indicator of the underlying strength of a democracy. One of the most common issues threatening public broadcasters is government efforts to influence their independence and pluralism.
