Italian Minister of Justice Andrea Orlando had recently appointed Adriano Sofri as an expert to help reform Italy's prisons. In 1990, Sofri was found guilty of ordering the 1972 murder of police officer Luigi Calabresi and sentenced to 22 years in prison. He has always proclaimed his innocence. Sofri is a very well-known journalist and intellectual and the author of many books, including some on prisons. Minister Orlando's decision was strongly attacked, so much so that Sofri decided to decline the position.
