A new law from the ruling far-right government has forced more than a third of Poland's Supreme Court judges to retire early. The move defies warnings by the European Commission that such an attack on the rule of law could eventually lead to Poland losing its EU voting rights. The law sets the retirement age for judges at 65, allowing the government to force out all judges over that age. Supreme Court First President Małgorzata Gersdorf, who turned 65 two months ago, has said that the new law is unconstitutional.
