George Soros, the founder and chairman of the Open Society Foundations (OSF), has met with Azerbaijan’s president to urge him to stop the crackdown against civil society and human rights defenders in the country. In recent months, the government has arrested dozens of activists, journalists, lawyers and others on false charges ranging from misappropriation of funds to treason. Many are already serving lengthy prison sentences. The OSF office in Baku was also targeted, with the government seizing computers and freezing assets in April of last year.
