NJCM responds to EU White Paper on Artificial Intelligence

On the 14th of June, the NJCM (Netherlands Committee of Jurists for Human Rights) submitted a response to the European Commission’s White Paper on artificial intelligence (AI).

by LibertiesEU

The response is part of the Commission’s consultation process for a common European approach with respect to AI.

The role of AI in our daily lives is growing significantly and is already applied in a wide array of sectors, such as health care, agriculture and industry. It can be used to protect citizens, but also poses great risks with regard to the protection of human rights. Especially the right to privacy, the right to equal treatment and the right to a fair process could be restricted or violated. In its response to the Commission’s consultation, the NJCM focuses specifically on the risks for human rights.

The Commission has written the White Paper to create a common framework on the responsible use of AI in Europe. It describes the potential of AI for the EU’s economy, but also highlights its risks and weaknesses. Member States, citizens, European institutions and other stakeholders, such as non-governmental organisations, academics and the industry have been invited to respond. The results of the consultation will be used in the development of future legislative efforts.
