A new Council of Europe convention, The Convention on preventing and combating violence against women and domestic violence, also known as the Istanbul Convention, enters into force on August 1. It establishes a set of international standards to tackle violence against women and a specific monitoring mechanism to ensure its effective implementation. It comes at a time when violence against women is high across Europe, with "one-fifth to one-quarter of all women" suffering physical abuse at least once during adulthood and more than one in ten falling victim to forcible sexual assault.
