A few weeks ago, the Italian government drafted a code of conduct for NGOs involved in search-and-rescue activities in the Mediterranean.
This code was to be undersigned by those organizations in order for them to continue their work. But NGOs, including Médecins Sans Frontières, Jugend Rettet and Sea Watch, have refused to sign the code because the rules it establishes are incompatible with their professional ethics, especially the obligation for boats to have an armed police officer onboard. The consequences of the NGOs' refusal are still unknown, but the code doesn't have any legal force.
