The decision by EU states to impose internal border checks to stem migrant flows is turning Switzerland into a transit country, EU border agency Frontex says. African migrants arriving in Italy are avoiding Austria and instead going to Switzerland in the hope of reaching northern EU states, Frontex said in a report released on February 15. As fewer people are reported entering Germany from Austria, there are at the same time more detections at the Swiss border. Austria imposed additional checks at its border with Italy last summer, and those caught at the border are turned back to Italy.
