Lithuania has issued a postage stamp to commemorate Lithuanian women being granted voting rights. Lithuania became one of the first states in Europe to allow women to vote, on 2 November 1918. This shows that even at the beginning of the 20th century democratic principles founded on the equality as well as human rights were important to Lithuania. And they are still relevant today. As such, when celebrating the centenary of the restoration of Lithuania’s statehood, we should also celebrate this significant achievement in women’s suffrage.
