The European Court of Human Rights has rejected the Renzi government's offer to pay compensation to the two inmates of the Asti penitentiary who were victims of torture at the hands of the police (a case brought forward by Amnesty Italia and Antigone). It appears money from Italy, which is apparently willing to pay as much as 1.5 million euros to torture victims, will not suffice for the court: the Italian state is expected to provide answers on why there is still no crime of torture. Will this be a stimulus for finally approving the law that has been lagging in Senate for months?
