Italian mayors continue to protest against the refugee policy of Interior Minister Matteo Salvini. The Italian government passed a new immigration law on 28 November that makes it easier to expel migrants and abolishes humanitarian residence permits. The mayors of Palermo and Naples declared their willingness to open their cities' ports to civilian rescue ships, but before Christmas Salvini reiterated that the ports should remain closed. The mayors of Florence, Bari and Milan are also protesting against the new regulations. In response, Salvini has demanded that they resign.
