Italy's Court of Cassation has rejected the final appeal of two officers against their conviction for beating a detainee for having converted to Islam. The officers were originally given sentences of 2 years and 8 months and a 5,000-euro fine for the abuse, which occurred at the Asti Correctional Facility in 2010, but an appeals court later reduced it to one year for each officer. The Court of Cassation's ruling, released earlier this month, makes this sentence final.

This case was taken into consideration by the UN's Committee against Torture when it was completing its report on the country.
