The Italian media didn’t talk often about migration in 2016, doing so only through politicians and institutional representatives. Only in a very few cases were migrants’ voices given airtime. A new report also finds that a lot of attention was given to the arrival of migrants in Italy but not to their journey or what happens next. Hate speech is mostly present on social media; however, Giovanni Maria Bellu, president of Associazione Carta di Roma, used the presentation of their report to remind people that hate speech often comes from bad information by mainstream media.
