Senior judge Willem Korthals Altes is considering challenging the Dutch State in court. According to him, the age limit that is included in the Judicial Officers Act (Wet rechtspositie rechterlijke ambtenaren) according to which judges in the Netherlands are obliged to retire when they turn 70, is contrary to the prohibition of discrimination on grounds of age. According to Korthals Altes, the law that dates from 1932 needs to be revised in light of the age expectancy and the recent government policy according to age limits in other professions.
