Around 280,000 migrants entered the EU in 2014, compared to just over 100,000 in the previous year. "The reasons for the dramatic increase in migration are many: the dramatic situation in Syria, Eritrea, South Sudan, Democratic Republic of Congo and Iraq combined with the fact that Libya is de facto a failed state without functioning law enforcement," Frontex spokeswoman Ewa Moncure said Wednesday. An increasingly violent and chaotic situation in Libya, a key jumping-off point for migrants, has also helped prompt the huge hike in the number of asylum seekers trying to reach Europe.
