Hungary’s Curia has overruled the decision of the National Election Committee and given the green light to a referendum initiative calling to withdraw the so-called NGO law. The controversial legislation stigmatises NGOs as foreign agents and puts unnecessary burdens on them in the name of transparency. The referendum was initiated by a private person affiliated with a new party, Momentum. With the Curia’s decision, the actual petition signing is allowed to commence. On a separate note, in September 23 Hungarian NGOs filed a joint appeal to the Constitutional Court against the law.
