The new attorney general of the Dutch Supreme Court, Jos Silvis, argued in his installation speech that the ideal of the protection of human rights is under pressure. Silvis, a former judge at the European Court of Human Rights, stressed that it is worrisome that member states of the European Convention on Human Rights want to review the judgments of the court on a national level in order to determine compliance. According to Silvis, this is a breach of the Convention and constitutes a fundamental disregard for the irrevocable status of the court's judgments.
