A public prosecutor in Greece has opened an investigation into allegations of systematic violence against asylum seekers at the Evros River. The river, which spans the land border between Greece and Turkey, is a well-known crossing point for asylum seekers trying to enter the EU. But, according to 63 witnesses who have spoken with the prosecutor, it is also a place of severe human rights abuses. Asylum seekers are captured by local Greek police, who detain them in remote warehouses or violently force them into inflatable boats and send them back to Turkey.
