Germany will need 260,000 immigrants every year for the next 40 years to meet increasing labour demand, a new study by the Bertelsmann Foundation based on calculations by the Institute for Employment Research and the University of Coburg has concluded. The study included factors such as higher birthrate, more women joining the workforce, and a raise in the retirement age. Migration from other EU countries will not be sufficient to meet Germany’s labour demand. The study estimates that by 2060, 114,000 people a year will be moving to Germany from other EU states.
