BfV, Germany's domestic intelligence agency, will increase monitoring of the far-right opposition party Alternative for Germany (AfD) for suspected extremism. The Berlin government aims to avoid the spread of radical hate speech. AfD sees Islam as a threat to German values, and is urging tough immigration curbs, among other measures. Under the German constitution BfV has the power to act against perceived threats to the democratic order. The agency will also impose a higher level of surveillance on the AfD youth organisation JA, as well as on an AfD grouping called Flügel.
