Internet Day on 6 February 2018, German Chancellor Angela Merkel said that the
German Network Enforcement Act (NetzDG) had to be evaluated and possibly amended. Merkel made this announcement in a video podcast that aired on 2
February. NetzDG fully entered into force
on 1 January 2018. It is designed to counter hatred and 'fake news' on the internet by requiring social networks to remove illegal content from their platforms
within 24 hours.
