France's first "shooting gallery" – a safe place where drug users can inject under medical supervision – was opened Tuesday at a hospital in Paris. Drug users will visit the room to exchange hard drugs like heroin and crack for substitutes, along with sterile injection kits. Critics say it could encourage drug use, but drug activists point out that such places put users – often poor, marginalized and sick – in touch with professionals who can help them. The clean environment also reduces the risks from contaminated hard drugs bought from criminal dealers.
