A bright journalism student who fled the Taliban, Omid, 17, is one of hundreds of refugees stuck at Hungary’s border. Each day, only 15-17 people are allowed entry through each of two transit points; the rest wait in fields a stone’s throw from the border fence and the EU. The UNHCR is strongly criticizing the situation, and its recent report on Hungary finds that "significant aspects of Hungarian law and practice raise serious concerns as regards compatibility with international and European law." The UNHCR urges changes to the restrictive policies and better conditions for those waiting.
