An appeals court in Hungary last week sentenced a man to three years in prison for verbally and physically assaulting participants in the Budapest Pride March four years ago. Four other defendants were given suspended prison sentences. On July 6, 2013, three men were returning home from the Pride event when a group of 20-30 radicals blocked their way, shouting "you are faggots, you are Gypsies" before beating them up. In a key part of the ruling, the appeals court disagreed with the first-instance court and found that the anti-gay chants were not protected free speech.
