The Court of Justice of the European Union (CJEU) has ruled that a Facebook user in Austria may start an individual procedure against Facebook-Ireland (the location of Facebook's international headquarters) before an Austrian court. However, he cannot rely on this right when he wants to start a collective procedure as the representative of other consumers. The CJEU responded a request for a preliminary ruling from an Austrian judge. Facebook argued that Austrian courts do not have jurisdiction. The judgment in case C-498/16 was delivered on 25 January 2018.
