Following concerns expressed by the German government, Facebook decided to roll out its new tools to fight the spread of fake news on the internet in Germany. The system will let users flag potentially fake articles. The flagged contents will then be checked by third-party fact checkers. If they find them unreliable, the stories will be marked as “disputed” in the newsfeeds. Germany, with parliamentary elections this year, is particularly sensitive to misinformation. Buzzfeed recently reported that Facebook pages were publishing fake stories on Chancellor Merkel, who is up for re-election.
