The European Parliament’s Civil Liberties Committee (LIBE) agreed on Monday to increase border control by gradually adding 10,000 new border and coast guards, more efficient return procedures and strengthened cooperation with non-EU countries. The draft report was adopted by 35 to 9 with 8 abstentions. The LIBE Committee and the Greens/EFA group insisted however that Frontex, Europe’s border and coast guard agency, would not get the power to assist third countries with deportations. Once the Council reaches its position, the three institutions will enter into trialogue negotiations.
