After the radical Islamist attacks in Paris, the European Union is going to up its fight against terrorism. The heads of state and government leaders particularly want to strengthen and modernize the external borders of the Schengen area. They call for systematic and coordinated checks of individuals who potentially pose a threat and ''urgently'' want to introduce a passenger name register (PNR). Concerned about the privacy of citizens, the European Parliament has for years opposed a PNR, but has opened the door for it two weeks ago.
