In an effort to stop the flow of migrants trying to reach the EU, the European Commission announced on Tuesday plans for Turkey-type deals with Middle East and African nations. The Commission said that it will spend €8 billion over five years on development aid and other assistance for states that agree to help. Ethiopia, Lebanon, Jordan, Mali, Niger, Nigeria and Senegal are counties the Commission is focusing on. Liberal MEP Guy Verhofstadt was critical of the plan, saying, “We give you money and you keep the refugees - this cannot be a compact."
