Police cannot stop random vehicles for traffic checks based solely on ethnic or religious characteristics or backgrounds of the driver or passengers. That is what the Dutch Supreme Court has decided in a case about dynamic traffic checks. The judgment concerned a case in which the suspect, arrested for drug possession, was acquitted because he was stopped at such a dynamic traffic check. The court added that in this specific case, the police handled the case correctly because the license plate number and the driver's license were checked first.
