On the European Day Against Human Trafficking, the Dutch National Rapporteur on Trafficking and Sexual Violence against Children, Corinne Dettmeijer, stated in her annual statement that the fight against trafficking should be audible, visible and tangible. At this moment, modern slavery is too common. Dettmeijer finds that people in close proximity to victims often fail to recognize a case as human trafficking, although they should recognize that victims were suffering. "That is the essence of exploitation. A clear violation of human rights."
