Police Chief Erik Akerboom of the Dutch National Police Force will not be allowing female police officers to wear headscarves. The Amsterdam police proposed last week to allow headscarves to be worn by police in uniform in the future, in order to attract more officers from different backgrounds. The proposal led to strong reactions from both civil society and within the police force itself. According to the police, the uniform should be "lifestyle neutral," which does not fit with a headscarf. The Dutch police are staying committed to finding new ways to secure diversity within the force.
