Offering refugees a home is part of Dutch culture, claims King Willem-Alexander. He sees his own role in society as unifying, representative and encouraging. He wants to be there for people in need, with refugees, but also Dutch citizens who feel threatened. The king often talks with refugees, but often during meetings behind closed doors. Queen Máxima, too, stressed that she and her husband have often taken work visits to visit with refugees.
