The Dutch state secretary for security and justice recently denied two asylum requests by Albanian nationals, because Albania is considered to be a "safe country." In addition, the applicants had not proven that their sexual preference changed the safe status of Albania. During the appellate process, the Administrative Jurisdiction Division of the Dutch Council of State asked Advocate General Widdershoven to investigate whether the government must give reasons why a country is viewed as safe in specific asylum applications. The opinion will be issued before a scheduled hearing on June 9, 2016.
