Italy's Chamber of Deputies has voted through a bill that aims to reduce the use of remand detention and strengthen the conditions according to which a judge may order a person detained while they await trial. The number of prisoners on remand in Italy is far higher than the European average. The bill now needs passage by the Senate to become law.
